In 2017, a group of fisherman and fishing boat owners came together to form Fuvahmulak Fisherman Cooperative Society (FFCS) and became it’s first members, in hopes to change the condition of the fisherman of the island and to solve the challenges they face.
For years, fisherman of the island has been dependent on government fisheries company to buy their fish. Fish are bought at a very low price, compared to other parts of the country where private companies drive competition.
Fuvahmulaku fisherman has also faced the issue of getting Ice reliably from the island. Previous attempts by the government and others have failed so far, with sub-par services from the ice facility in the island. FFCS was created to solve these issues, and to drive the fishing community forward.
With a vision to be a market leader, FFCS is working hard to build a processing plant in Fuvahmulah City harbour, to collect tuna fish. This facility will be capable of collecting and freezing high-quality tuna products to export to foreign markets.
The facility will be able to provide all the ice that the fishing vessels in the community need.
FFCS plans to market local products, made by the community, such as smoked fish, etc to a wider market.
Our board is elected among the members of the Cooperative for a two-year term.
Our management team is focused on driving the co-op forward.
